Also, in cases where medication and other therapies don't seem to be effective, a Total hip replacement surgery is advised.
The Total hip replacement procedure involves replacement of the damaged bone and cartilage with prosthetic components.

  • The damaged femoral head is removed and replaced with a metal stem that is placed into the hollow center of the femur. The femoral stem may be either cemented or "press fit" into the bone.
  • A metal or ceramic ball is placed on the upper part of the stem. This ball replaces the damaged femoral head that was removed.
  • The damaged cartilage surface of the socket (acetabulum) is removed and replaced with a metal socket. Screws or cement are sometimes used to hold the socket in place.
  • A plastic, ceramic, or metal spacer is inserted between the new ball and the socket to allow for a smooth gliding surface.

Before the surgery, we administer a series of tests on you to determine your fitness and body condition to be able to take the surgery. This ensures the success of the procedure and also helps in minimizing the chances of complications. In a Total hip replacement procedure complications are usually rare, but in some cases they may emerge. Blood clotting, infection, loosening/dislocation of the ball (high possibility during the first few months), and excessive pain could be prevalent. But our experts are trained to efficiently handle these and also guide you to be able to prevent these occurrences.
Most patients report stiffness in movement post-surgery, but this is common and gets back to normal over a period of time. You must adhere to the exercise regime and physical movements Hip replacement is done through an incision made along the side of the hip. The upper end of the thigh bone which is round in shape is cut and replaced with the implant's components. It may be stabilized with or without cement. The surface of the hip joint which has to receive the ball component (often damaged because of arthritis) is made even and smooth by the surgeon, advised to you as it would help in regaining flexibility and muscle strength. Also, high pressure movements are to be avoided for a certain time. Implant may last a few years but, be prepared for a gradual wear and tear due to daily activities. In such cases, a revision surgery must be necessary.
